History of Hospital Chapel

From a small fellowship of believers to a thriving mission-driven ministry, the history of Hospital Chapel is a remarkable testimony of faith, resilience, divine provision, and God’s unfailing grace through the years.

Our Story

Faith-driven growth from fellowship to global mission

From a humble fellowship in 1999 to a thriving spiritual hub within the National Hospital Abuja, Hospital Chapel stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and divine provision—growing from a handful of believers into a vibrant mission-driven community committed to “Reaching the Unreached and Discipling the Nations.

Hospital Chapel started as a “Hospital Christian Fellowship” in the year 1999, when some Christian brethren who were employed as staff of the National Hospital for Women and Children, Abuja decided to fellowship together and to pray. The expression of their desire to fellowship together culminated into the first meeting which was held on Friday 24th September, 1999 at 2:00 PM in Dr Bunmi Ladipo’s office. Due to constraint of space, the Fellowship later moved to Dr Bose Babaniyi’s office, and was finally permitted the use of the National Hospital Auditorium after an application was written to the Hospital Management.

In the course of time, due to contention and other challenges, the Hospital Management decided to allocate parcels of land to the Fellowship to build a place of worship. Hospital Christian Fellowship was allocated a land measuring 30m x 30m to build a place for worship in April, 2000. The land chosen for the building of the chapel was desolate and erosion prone, and isolated from the rest of the hospital community. There was no access road and other amenities nearby. The situation looked grim and daunting, even as the Fellowship was asked to vacate the Hospital Auditorium and move to their allocated land for worship.

By faith, the Hospital Christian Fellowship; even though it had only little money in the bank account, few bags of cement and few blocks, invited other brethren and men of God in Abuja to come for the foundation laying ceremony and prayer for the beginning of the building of Chapel. Through the help of God and His divine provisions, Chapel was built in record time and was dedicated in the year 2001 to the amazement of all and sundries. The testimony is that God’s hand was manifest from the foundation laying ceremony up to the completion of the building of the one-story structure known as the “Smaller Auditorium” and the construction of the main auditorium as well. The Fellowship that was started by few brethren, has by the grace of God, weathered all the storms, obstacles and challenges thrown at it, and expanded over the years to become known as “Hospital Chapel” National Hospital, Abuja,” in 2002.

Right from its inception, the vision of the Chapel has been “Reaching the Unreached and Discipling the Nations,” while the Mission Statement is “Building an Army of Vibrant Christians. People filled with the Spirit of God and Power, literally living the Life of Christ (the word of God) in Dignity, Integrity, and Quality, impacting their community for Christ.” The vision and mission Statement have been the fulcrums and thrust of the Chapel all these years. In order to actualize these mandates, Chapel has hosted several mission conventions; where missionaries in and around Abuja and various states were convened in the Chapel and were trained, encouraged, refreshed and sent back to their fields to be more impactful. Also, Chapel have adopted and is presently supporting and sponsoring many missionaries in various fields, and those of other mission agencies in Nigeria and abroad.

Hospital Chapel is a training ground for members to be equipped so that they can go and impact their communities for Christ. Through carefully curated Bible studies, prayer meetings, retreats, all-night vigils, various seminars and collaborations with various ministries and agencies like Haggai International, NEMA, ACTIVATE, Go-International, Bible Society, etc., members have been exposed and offered variety of platforms to be trained and equipped for work of the Master. Visits to various mission fields, organized outreaches and medical missions are endeavors embarked upon by the Chapel.  The chapel also serves as a conducive environment and place of prayer for the staff and employees (Catholics, Nurses and Doctors, Staff Fellowship, etc.) of the National Hospital during work hours.

In view of its central location in National Hospital, Abuja and vital proximity to the seat of power, Hospital Chapel has assumed the mandate and responsibility of a “LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY” where declarations and prayers are offered for various issues in Nigeria and other matters of national importance. The Declarations are being conducted every Sunday.

In conclusion, Hospital chapel can be likened to a Mustard Seed (the smallest seed) that was planted, and has blossomed to become a giant tree with branches for birds to peach on and providing shade for many animals to lie under.
